Gross density

The gross density of an object is the ratio between its mass and volume, i.e. (desired) pores and voids included. When selecting building materials (brick/hollow brick, insulating material, etc.), the gross density is important, as specific properties are related with this value:
  • High gross density = low porosity, high heat conductivity, low heat insulation, high heat storage capacity
  • Low gross density = high porosity, low heat conductivity, high heat insulation, low heat storage capacity.

For calculating the gross density and density, the same formula [ρ =m/V [kg/m³]] is applied.
